WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS

A report on the Show by Bob Rimmer.

When a small intrepid band of members arrived in the show room on Friday 16 April to set up for the exhibition and competition we looked around in amazement at the activity of the commercial stall-holders, fellow wood turning groups and the  band of professional turners. At that time we could not envisage any other course of action but to pack up and go home but we carried on regardless.

Tim Davies rapidly had his lathe and tools in place. No other lathe, club or professional, looked so resplendent.  Our small band drew inspiration from our leader and set about the erection of the Tim Davies Vertical Extension to the display table. soon it too looked resplendent swathed in pale beige linen substitute.

We unwrapped the sixty plus items that had been handed in at Hands on Day and additional items from Tim and Cliff Lane. At this stage we

thought that there were far too many.

We arranged the top shelf with eye-catching items aided by the helpful comments of Malcom Thorpe and Tom Badger. I was now convinced that we were right not to have obeyed our initial instincts.

We set about the middle

shelf and then the table top supporting pieces with white stands from the club and new platter stands made by Cliff and I the previous day. By six

o’clock we began to feel very proud of the variety, quality and the proportion of our members whose work was justifiably on display.

 

On Saturday we selected pieces by Greg Miller, Tim Davies and Cliff Lane to represent our club in competition. Non of these were placed in the top three but as the final outcome shows were highly regarded. We learnt the hard way what the professionals
